Remains of 22 Marines, sailors killed in WWII’s Battle of Tarawa are returning to US soil
The 76-hour Battle of Tarawa cost the lives of about 1,000 U.S. Marines and sailors, many of whom were buried where they fell. Efforts to exhume the graves and identify remains were hampered due to incomplete record keeping and by the alterations to the cemeteries shortly after the battle.
