NRA vows to continue fight for gun owners in post-Newtown climate »
Capping off a day of full-throated defense of Second Amendment gun rights, conservative commentator Glenn Beck told participants at the National Rifle Association's "Stand and Fight" rally that gun-control advocates "feel they must regulate us until we comply." Prior to the 2012 election, President Barack Obama promised to protect gun owners' rights only to go back on his word in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shooting that killed 20 schoolchildren and six adults, said NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre. Interspersed among the speeches were videos depicting pro-gun-control politicians in awkward or embarrassing moments, including Biden's off-the-cuff advice to women afraid for their safety to brandish and fire a shotgun. 1 The "well-financed Obama-Bloomberg-Biden media attack machine," as controversial retired Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North put it, unjustly blames the NRA and lawful gun owners for mass shootings such as the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in which shooter Adam Lanza took 26 lives with a Bushmaster AR-15 style semiautomatic rifle. 1 The solution to gun violence is greater mental health care and pinpointing those with violent potential, greater prosecution of gun crimes and more police and armed personnel in schools. Under current law, only sales by federally licensed firearms dealers require submission of a background check request to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, NICS. The Schumer bill would lead to a national registry of all guns and gun owners in federal hands, they argue, even though federal law requires background checks that "green light" a purchase are destroyed within 24 hours and records of firearms purchases are in the hands of gun dealers, not the federal government. After the Senate vote, Jackson Lee recalled the dejected looks of Sarah Brady, wife of former press secretary Jim Brady, who was severely wounded in the 1981 assassination attempt against President Ronald Reagan, and the parents of children killed in the Newtown mass shooting last December.
