Prime Minister Julia Gillard has called a ballot for the Labor leadership and says whoever loses should quit Parliament immediately. The dramatic announcement comes after backers of Mr Rudd circulated a petition to MPs to force a special Caucus meeting to hold a ballot aimed at ousting her from the Lodge. Ms Gillard while she has not seen the petition, it is in the best interests of the nation for the leadership issue to be resolved, and so a spill will be held at at 7.00pm AEST.
